The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

If you like Hollywood film and glamour of the 1950s this book is for  you!

This amazing novel is written by American author Taylor Jenkins Reid. She is a New York Times best selling author who is most known for books like Daisy Jones and the Six, Malibu Rising and of course The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Her books have grown great popularity online especially on TikTok and I can ensure you this book is worth the hype!

Like the last post I will give you a little insight into the book and tell you my thoughts and opinions (you can probably already guess I enjoyed this book lol).

WARNING: there are  SPOILERS in this blog post (I know im too kind)

So, in the words of Hollywood directors...

  Lights, Camera, Action 📣🎬

About the book:

Magazine Reporter, Monique Grant is not living her best life. Her husband has just left her, and her career is not developing as fast as she hoped. However, this is all changed when Monique receives a job offer she can't refuse. She starts working with Evelyn Hugo to tell the world the truth behind her glamorous and scandalous life in Hollywood. Monique is transported through the exciting and vulnerable life of the iconic film actress who is navigating her life and career behind the film cameras. You learn about all the highs and lows of Evelyn's life working in the film industry. Evelyn moves to Los Angeles in the 1950s, finds love, deals with heartbreak, and of course embarks on 7 different marriages. Monique grows a strong friendship with Evelyn, and it all makes sense why Evelyn wanted Monique to write her special story for the world to hear.

Thoughts:

Taylor Jenkins Reid really knows how to keep you engaged with her books. This was my first book I had read from her and wow!!! It was a really easy read, and I was hooked, I couldn't put the book down I kept wanting to find out more about each husband.

You get a mixture of the past and present and you really feel like you're friends with Evelyn as you get to know her personality through her life story. Her strong personality may be the downfall to some of her marriages and relationships with others.

The characters in this book are all so different. Evelyn is a ruthless woman who knows how to get what she wants. She doesn't let anyone walk over her and she works hard to make her career a success. I liked Reid made such an empowering female character that worked in the film industry in the 50s. Women weren't treated seriously. Evelyn was surrounded by sexism in the industry, and this forced her to make difficult decisions to get the roles she wanted, more fame and attention.

- "When you're given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn't give things, you take things."

- "You wonder what it must be like to be a man, to be so confident that the final say is yours."

Reid explores LGBTQ+ themes in this book. This was interesting especially considering the time period Evelyn story starts in (1950s Hollywood). I feel like there are times were Evelyn hides her true self and is scared to explore her forbidden love for a fellow actress. She deals with a lot of gossip through newspapers and word of mouth, some of which were of racist and homophobic nature.

- "I spent half my time loving her and the other half hiding how much I loved her"

I highly recommend this book to those who are getting into reading. It is a satisfying read where the author makes you feel like you've been on a journey. Evelyn Hugo is an extraordinary woman and in the words of this icon...

-  "Never let anyone make you feel ordinary."
