Anyways, You know the drill by now, so let's begin with a short summary of this 70's "rock n roll" inspired book.

About this book:

Daisy Jones is a young girl growing up in the spotlight of 1960s music scene in Hollywood. She is known to sneak into bars on the famous Sunset Strip to party with the Americas top musicians. She craves the attention and thrill from singing and adores the energy from rock and roll. In her 20s Daisy's voice becomes recognised and the singing career she once dreamt of is looking promising. Also during this time 70s, rock band The six are turning heads with Billy Dunne as their lead singer and they plan on touring the country. However, news that Billy's girlfriend Camilla is expecting their first child sends Billy in an downwards spiral as he feels the pressure and expectations of fatherhood. Daisy and The Six are introduced to each and it's realised that Daisy is a key component to the major success of the band. This book follows the rise and fall of  the sensational 1970s rock band Daisy Jones and the Six. Everyone knows who this band are but there is a mystery behind their sudden break up and no one knows why until know.

Thoughts:

In my opinion, Taylor Jenkins Reid never fails to disappoint. Like The Seven Husband of Evelyn Hugo, this book was fun, filled with emotion, scandal and empowerment. It also discusses some challenging themes like drug abuse and abortion that are well written into this story especially as the rock and roll scene was heavily impacted by drugs during the 1970s. Reid exposes the harsh reality of drug and substance abuse and how that can also affect loved ones around you.

The book is written in an interview layout. The transcript involves the band as well as family members, friends, music critics and the band's management.  This makes the book seem more personal and you get to understand the experience of each member. This format allowed you to get to know each characters personalities, characteristics and unique quirks. There were moments that I found myself laughing at the different ways the band members reacted to different situations that happened while on tour.

The characters of this book were very fun and cool I mean their rockstars after all. There was a real sense of friendships with the female characters bonding together and supporting one another. Camilla, Billy's girlfriend was really involved in supporting the band and would always join them in tour when she could. She formed a a close bond with Karen (the bands keyboardist) and supported her when she was experience life changing decisions. There is a brief love triangle in this book. Although Billy becomes a loving and devoted father and husband to camilla he cant help but notice he has a spark with Daisy making working together awkward and hard. This causes tension in the book and affects the productivity of band. Camilla was even able to have some form of friendship with Daisy and is found to give her solid advice at the end of the book. This shows how authentic Camilla was when supporting other women.

Daisy and Billy's obvious connection could be considered one of the successes but downfalls of the band. They were able to produce powerful songs that really connected with their audiences but it slowly turned into the Daisy and Billy show. This made other band member's jealous and annoyed as they felt people were forgetting the also existed on the stage.

The ending had potential for more but I was happy with the way the author concluded the book. It felt right when reading and I was also pleasantly surprised at different parts. The book felt real. It made me want to google this fictional band as if they were actually about in the 70s. Taylor Jenkins Reid said she was influenced by Fleetwood Mac and it definitely radiates those vibes throughout the story.  This book is being made into a movie and I CANT WAIT!! It will be interesting to see how the book and movie compares to each other.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to read more from this talent writer.

Next blog post will be out very soon so keep an eye out!
